Festive Afternoon Tea

For my birthday last month my lovely friend booked us an afternoon tea at No. 10 Manchester Street, a hotel in Marylebone. I was so excited; afternoon tea is up there on the list of favourite things alongside Christmas and Dick Van Dyke.

We started with a bit of a browse of Oxford and Regent’s Street, taking in the lovely lights and the grandeur of our wonderful city. This, however, became difficult quickly as each step had to be a deft manoeuvre around an oncoming Christmas shopper. Upon reaching the hotel, which was situated on a quieter street, we walked up some stone steps to a huge black door which boasted ‘No10’ in big gold figures. It was as though we had just won the general election.

The fancy primeministerial door led us into an equally fancy festive foyer, complete with a beautiful Christmas tree and huge red velvet chairs. Our coats were taken, (with our permission, not stolen) and we were shown to our table. We each sat on the softest, most cushiony velvet sofa you ever did see, and were brought peach Bellini’s to start with. There was that classy kind of Christmas music playing in the background, the type with choirs and pianos; Slade there was no room for you here.

The food was lovely. Cute triangle sandwiches sat on the bottom of the display while mini tarts, macaroons, profiteroles and strawberries awaited us at the top. The scones were also miniature, with plenty of clotted cream (win) and a selection of mini jams. With the huge chairs in the foyer, the massive door and all the miniature food you could easily pretend you were some kind of elf. We both went for a fancy tea to top off our fancy experience: White tea infused with peonies and rose petals. I know – la di da. I’d never had such a thing before and it was delightful – not too sweet while also tasting a bit like Parma Violets.

The staff were excellent; we didn’t feel rushed and were able to take our time making our way through the veritable feast. We would both definitely recommend visiting the No10 for tea; such a wonderful afternoon and all for a good deal on Groupon!
